Ship Sea Trial Inspection Checklist — What to Inspect, Record, and Report

Why sea trials are the most critical inspection event

The sea trial is the final proving ground before a newbuilding is delivered. It is the owner's last opportunity to verify that every system performs as specified — from main engine power output to the HVAC in the crew accommodation. A well-prepared site team uses the sea trial not just to witness standard tests, but to stress-test systems under real operating conditions and identify issues that simply cannot be found alongside the quay.

Classification societies require specific tests during sea trials: speed/power trials, crash stop and turning circle manoeuvres, anchor windlass testing, steering gear trials, and blackout recovery tests, among others. The owner's representative typically adds additional items: vibration measurements, noise surveys, accommodation comfort checks, and operational workflow tests for bridge and engine room.

The essential sea trial checklist

Main engine and propulsion: record fuel consumption at contract MCR (Maximum Continuous Rating), turbocharger performance, exhaust temperatures per cylinder, governor response, shaft vibration levels, and stern tube bearing temperatures. Speed/power trial results must match the contractual speed ±0.5 knots under the specified conditions.

Navigation and communication: verify all GMDSS equipment, test radar performance in various sea states, confirm ECDIS chart loading and route planning, test AIS transmission, verify VDR recording, and check all internal communication systems. Each bridge console and emergency station must function correctly.

Steering and manoeuvring: turning circle (35° rudder, both sides), crash stop from full ahead, Williamson turn, zig-zag test (10°/10° and 20°/20°), and emergency steering from the steering gear room. Record rudder response times and hydraulic pressures.

Safety systems: test CO2/water mist fire-fighting systems (simulation), lifeboat and rescue boat davit operations, emergency generator auto-start on blackout, bilge system cross-connections, and watertight door closure from the bridge.

Auxiliary systems: test all cargo handling equipment (if applicable), ballast water management system, fresh water generator output and quality, sewage treatment plant, oily water separator, and incinerator. Record all performance parameters against specification.
