The anatomy of a site supervision team
A newbuilding site supervision team is the owner's eyes and ears at the shipyard. The team structure varies by vessel type and complexity, but a typical VLCC or large container ship build requires: a Site Team Leader (STL) or Project Manager, a Hull Superintendent (structural and outfitting), a Machinery Superintendent (main engine, auxiliaries, piping), an Electrical Superintendent (power, navigation, communication), and a Painting Superintendent (coating and surface preparation). Larger or more complex projects — LNG carriers, cruise ships — may have additional specialists for cargo systems, HVAC, or interior outfitting.
The Site Team Leader coordinates the overall supervision effort, manages relationships with the shipyard project team and classification surveyors, and is responsible for the monthly progress report. Each superintendent leads inspections in their discipline, manages the ITP for their scope, and feeds data into the consolidated project record.
Common team challenges
The biggest challenge for most site teams is information fragmentation.
