Tank testing verifies the structural integrity and watertightness of every tank on the vessel — ballast tanks, cargo tanks, fuel oil tanks, fresh water tanks, and void spaces. Each must be tested to the satisfaction of the classification society before the vessel can be delivered. A single failed test means draining, re-inspecting, repairing, recoating, and retesting — which can add weeks to the schedule.
Good tank testing management is not complicated, but it requires systematic scheduling, clear documentation, and reliable coordination with class surveyors.
What tank testing involves
- Test planning — identifying every tank, the applicable test method (hydrostatic, pneumatic, or structural), the required test head, and the acceptance criteria from class rules.
- Scheduling — coordinating test dates with the shipyard's construction sequence and the classification surveyor's availability.
- Pre-test inspection — verifying that the tank structure is complete, welding is finished, and the coating (where applicable) is ready for test.
- Execution — filling the tank to the required test head, holding for the specified duration, and inspecting for leaks.
- Documentation — recording test parameters, results, and any defects found. Photos of the tank condition before and after testing.
- Class witness sign-off — the surveyor confirms the test is satisfactory and signs the relevant documentation.
Common problems
The most frequent issues in tank testing management are scheduling conflicts (the surveyor is unavailable when the tank is ready), incomplete pre-test preparation (welding or coating not finished), and poor documentation (test records not linked to the specific tank or not including required data points). All of these are preventable with proper tracking.
